Penang’s always been famous for their hawker fare but Michelin-star chef Teppei Yamashita of Singapore’s Teppei Syokudo and Man Man Japanese Unagi restaurant entering the Malaysian food scene at former sawmill, The Saw Emporium.
Refurbished by The Steamship Merchants, this beautiful art-deco heritage building is an Instagrammer’s dream with it’s 1950’s architecture, located within the Seven Streets Precinct and Macallum heritage enclave near, the upcoming Penang Arts District. Transformed into a multi-concept dining and lifestyle destination, Swallow@The Saw Emporium opens on November 10 at 6PM and sees fine dining restaurateurs and bars in a more casual setting.
Other food outlets include modern Thai restaurant Soi 55, All-American steakhouse Embers which provides an Asian twist to the much loved BBQ meats, the award-winning Malaysian brand Taps Beer Bar – which has the widest range of and only serves craft beer – and the thirst quenching juice bar Qwenchers, which will be a welcome respite from Penang’s scorching heat.
It’s not just for foodies – Swallow@ The Saw Emporium doubles as a lifestyle showroom with designer pieces by Kian Furniture in the courtyard, covered terrace, lounges, bar and dining area, marrying industrial chic with greenery. You can also expect to see a repurposed 5m long timber dining table in the courtyard, as well as salvaged parts from the former sawmill.
Expect kitchen takeovers by guest chefs’, pop up kitchens, musicians, designers, craftsmen and community activities for the duration of Swallow@The Saw Emporium until Q1 of 2018.
