Velvet Underground and Wine Bar are no more, but you can still eat, drink and party at Singapore’s “best nightlife spot” at its new premises
The final party at Jiak Kim Street wasn’t goodbye. After several false starts and stops, Zouk has finally moved out of its home of 25 years. It’s also changed hands, and now belongs to the Genting Hong Kong Group.
First to open in the new warehouse complex in November was Red Tail, a gastrobar with food and cocktails. But to get the party started, head upstairs where technology holds sway in the new 30,000 sq ft. space which Zouk shares with Phuture. (A fourth concept will be unveiled at a later date.)
The setting is modern-industrial. From folded metal panes to brick walls and brass-toned furniture, the two-storey chamber boast artworks commissioned by local artists. There are no less than five concept bars if you’re thirsty.
Don’t even get us started on the music and graphics. Other than upholding its foundation of crisp quality sound, get lost in a forest of dramatic lights that synchronises to the music. Think of a multitude of 120 light pattern effects radiated by lasers and concentrated beams to suit the moment; it’s an act on its own!
If the dance floor is not for you, distance yourselves from the crowd by reserving premium seats on the second level. Zouk heard you–metal grills have been placed for added privacy, while compartments can be found under each seat for your bag. Two-tiered platform seats can be found around the edges of the dance floor. Did we mention how Zouk and Phuture can be merged to cater to large-scale events?
Before you head down, here is what you can expect from their regular scheduling:
TGIW: Zouk’s signature midweek affair with resident DJ LeNERD, featuring hip hop and trap
Phuture DJ Battle: friendly competition judged by old-time Zouk residents across various genres
Phuture Thursdays: Showcase of up-and-coming local music talents
Opening hours: Wed-Sat, from 9pm. Zouk Singapore, 3C River Valley Road, The Cannery. Tel: 6738 2988
