Test your tolerance of spice at Hokkaido chain Sama Curry & Café that’s bound to leave you wanting for more.

Hot and spicy, just the way most Singaporeans like it. Sama Curry & Café brings us Hokkaido’s soul food—soup curry. The first in Singapore to offer this hearty, warm and spicy Japanese dish, the soup comes in three spice levels: baby bear, adult bear and crazy bear. Challenge your friends to the highest spice level, Level 30, if they like the burn.

The vibe

The cosy dining establishment gives a homely ambience, with cute illustrations of bears gracing the wall. Boasting matching wood furniture to Japanese decors, natural light pours in from the extensive windows in the day, making it a laid-back space to enjoy your meal.

The food

Sama Curry & Café prides themselves in whipping up authentic Hokkaido traditional curry. Different from usual Japanese gravy-like curries, their curry is less thick and has a more watery consistency, yet still holding the pungent, strong curry flavours. We love the fact that we can customise the curry to suit our palates too. They offer three different levels of spice, baby bear (level 0-5), adult bear (level 6-15) and crazy bear, (level 16-30); four different soup bases including tomato, coconut, Japanese and shrimp, as well as an extensive menu of curry choices like Keema Natto (fermented soybeans, $16.90), Oink Oink ($15.90), and Hungry Bear ($18.90).

One of the more popular choices is their Cheesy Bear ($16.80). It is recommended to pair this with the coconut soup base, as the milky coconut body complements the mozzarella cheese and fried chicken. Our favourite is the Marathon Chicken ($14.90). Tender chicken leg alongside an assortment of vegetables like carrot, baby corn and broccoli are cooked in a peppery and light Japanese soup base.

Their menu also offers side dishes that will leave you satisfied. A must-try is their Hokkaido Imomochi Cheese ($6.50)  that’s handsomely filled with gooey mozzarella cheese and fried to crisp perfection. Their Hokkaido crab cream croquette ($6.50) is another best-seller with its creamy filling showcasing bits of vegetable.
