Hold the meat! Inspired by the European meatless cuisine wave that has swept Taiwan, Joie serves up a six-course lunch ($38.80) and seven-course dinner ($68.80) with an array of modern Japanese fusion dishes, playfully presented. We loved the button mushroom gratin, presented in an escargot plate with melted mozzarella cheese, and the hearty snow pear and napa cabbage consommé served in a teapot.

Howdy, mate! All the way from down under hails Pie Face, a micro-bakery café that produces pies made with a 48-layered crust in both savoury regular and mini ($3) sizes. The chunky steak pie ($5.20), with hearty beef chunks and gravy, is one of the most popular, and the Thai chicken curry pie ($4.90) is fragrant and spicy. Also try the mini dessert pies ($3.30).

Have a Caribbean lunch with Limehouse Deli, which offers both lunchtime grab-and-go delights and dine-in menus for those who wish to soak in the reggae vibe. With chefs from Trinidad and Tobago, the eatery brings Jamaican patties ($4-4.50) and mains like jerk chicken ($12) and curry goat ($13) to the CBD area.
