Three comfort food places get a refreshed menu.

Skip the long suppertime queues at Kovan and Tanjong Katong outlets and head to Ponggol Nasi Lemak‘s new Jalan Besar digs. The 35-year-old brand’s fast-food style eatery is the brainchild of third generation owner, Edmund Ang and his fourth aunt Madam Ang. The uninitiated will find it easy to order the nasi lemak combo sets, while long-time fans will go early for outlet-only specials: triple-fried chicken skin ($1.50/serving), and grilled Japanese squid ($7.50) with kicap manis. Other spanking new highlights include hibiscus ice tea ($1.90), ice cream and sorbet ($2.50/cup). #01-01, 371 Jalan Besar. Tel: 6293 0020

Xi Men Ding Taiwan Cuisine just got a facelift–and a new menu. Fans of their San Bei dishes (from $14.90), Buddha Jumps over the Wall ($23.80), Lion Head meatball ($16.80) and Taiwanese beef noodles ($12.90) needn’t worry about those mainstays. What’s new: healthy salad options (from $8.90) with homemade goma dressing and deep-fried Dancing Fish ($18.90). #01-51A VivoCity, 1 Harbourfront Walk. Tel: 6376 8018

Local takes priority at Flavours at Zhongshan Park‘s updated a la carte menu. In the Wok Series ($17.90-24.90), diners are offered beef, pork and other selections cooked in sauces such as ginger and onion, and chef Melvin Lim’s Flavour’s Signature Sauce. He’s also increased the choices for Twist of Flavours, so there are more creative items such as assam sambal octopus ($28.90) and balsamic caramelised lamb rack with dried chilli in kung po style ($38.90). 16 Ah Hood Road.
