Extra large Japanese rice bowls with Wagyu beef, scrummy seafood soup and a crazy meat and salad platter.

Are you constantly on a search for places to dine with family and friends while on a budget? These three hawkers have upsized their signature items to serve extra large portions, so we couldn’t resist going on a tasting quest to see what the hype is about. Check out our video or read on!

鲜一代 Fresh Generation

Stall #164 Bukit Timah Market, 51 Upper Bukit Timah Road. Tel: 9451 1633
Opened by the same people behind Woon Woon Pek Beehoon (稳稳白米粉) at Changi Village, this stall’s signature seafood platter ($28, serves 3) screams fresh.

You can be assured they know their way around crustaceans. Check out the rich seafood broth that brings out the natural sweetness of crayfish, scallops, prawns, sliced fish, clams and lobster ball. For added spice, whet your appetite with chilli (think of the type that you have with chicken rice) blended with lime juice to complement the dish. Want more crayfish? Feel free to top up your bowl with additional ingredients (from $2).

Don.档

30 Foch Road. Tel: 9119 2619

Calling all lovers of donburi! This hawker stall dishes out Japanese rice bowls (from $7.90) with a western twist. Look to toppings such as Wagyu beef, salted egg tempura and mentaiko salmon served with an onsen egg. Although Don.档 uses short-grain rice, we felt the rice could do with more seasoning.

Whether you are there in a group or for the first time, the Kyodai Don ($28.90) has got you covered with a taste of all six items on the menu—including crispy Iberico pork belly, Korean sweet & spicy as well as garlic parmesan chicken. This mega bowl suits 2-4 pax, but we thought it was just right for three petite diners.

Chops Grill & Sides

727 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6. Tel: 9188 8206

Gym rats will like the sound of this. Load up on protein with the XXL platter ($59.90) comprising six different meats and 10 side dishes. Other than the pan-fried salmon and tender ribeye steak, we were sold by the crisp fried breaded fish where you don’t have to worry about it being soggy. With so much flavour packed in one sitting, you might even forget about the sauces (psst… dip the fries in instead).

If that’s not enough to feed your team of 4 bottomless pits or 8 small eaters, tuck into a plethora of sides made from scratch such as the mashed potato with brown sauce, aglio olio, and cherry tomatoes seasoned with appetising homemade marinade to cleanse your palate.

Chops Grill & Sides also offers bar snacks and is looking to introduce a breakfast platter too—think scrambled eggs and sausage patties!
