Duck into the serene Fort Canning for a meal at this all-day dining outlet. The weekend buffet ($32++, Sat-Sun 6-9pm) is Peranakan, Teochew or Hakka-themed—don’t worry, it’s also flexible—so call ahead to enquire or reserve. If you’re lost, look out for the NUS Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. The restaurant is within the building above it. Try the Peranakan cafe’s ayam buah keluak, sayur lodeh and curry laksa, before helping yourself to the kuehs and sometimes, mango pudding (from $10.80++; Mon-Fri 11.15am-3pm; Sat-Sun & PH 11.15am-2.30pm, 3-5.15pm; Fri-Sun & PH 6-9.30pm). Nosh on the Weekend Peranakan Afternoon Tea Buffet ($39++, min. two to dine; Sat-Sun 3-5pm) which features a tiffin carrier brimming with yesteryear favourites. Help yourself to unlimited servings of the Peranakan chicken curry, flavoured with homemade rempah paste; and delights from pastry chef Philip Lee such as durian pengat, red cherries coconut tart, and gula melaka

Step right up for a good mix of dishes (over 30) featuring the Penang char kway teow, laksa and
chendol (from $23.90++; Mon-Sat 11.30am-2.30pm, 6-9.30pm). You’ll also find assam prawns, kueh pie tee, homemade achar and an assortment of kueh. The restaurant will be closed during Chinese New Year (18-22 Feb) and buffet prices will see a $3 surcharge when they re-open (till 5 March). However, festive items like hao shi fa cai and shark’s fin soup will only be available then. Order a salmon yusheng (top-up $28.80++/36.80++) to make it a celebration.

Immerse yourself in Peranakan fare at Sun’s Café as you bask in the restaurant’s natural light. Go for the signatures: sambal prawn with juicy petai, fish maw with pork ball soup, and itik sioh (from $29++; Mon-Fri 12pm-2.30pm, Sat-Sun 12pm-3pm, Fri-Sun 6.30-10pm).
