Also known as FreakShakes or CakeShakes, this dessert-drink that’s topped with sweets like candy floss, Tokyo Banana and ice cream sandwich is taking over Singapore by storm.
From salted egg croissant to rainbow bagels and churros, Singaporeans are huge adopters of trendy food–if it’s flooding our Instagram feed then it’s an absolute must try. And while these monstrous milkshakes have been around for nearly a year, we felt this shout-out was much needed with the arrival of the originators, Pâtissez. Discover what all the fuss’s about and head to these five hipster cafes and restaurants for a taste of the decadent treat that’s both a drink and a dessert.
The original creators of this extravagant milkshake has finally landed on our shores, all the way from Canberra, calling Holland Village home. The sole proprietor of the term FreakShakes, the owners spent many painstaking hours designing each drinks to ensure they were well-balanced and not cloyingly sweet. Most of their ingredients are house made from start to finish too. Fans of Nutella will love the Pretzella ($16), where the sweetness from the Nutella is counter balanced with salty pretzels and an airy vanilla mousse that’s so delicate you won’t feel any guilt finishing it up. The refreshing Mint Condition ($16) is another must try. Get your hands dirty and enjoy the mint ice cream sandwich that’s gracing the top of the milkshake, before slurping down the delectable mint chocolate drink. #01-06, 118 Holland Avenue. The House of Robert Timms
With five flavours, the milkshakes here are rich and decadent–while still being easy to eat, thanks to canny construction of the toppings. Our favourite is Vanilla Bonbon ($16) — a classic vanilla milkshake showcasing an entire sugar donut drizzled with chocolate sauce sitting atop the Mason jar, alongside marshmallows, chopped almonds and pretzels. But if you’re a fan of strawberry milk, go for their Strawberry Whoopee; a lovely strawberry milkshake consisting of Fruit Loops and strawberry Pocky. 01-02/03 Wheelock Place, 01 Orchard Road. Tel: 6735 9201
Take shelter at The Lab after a shopping spree at Haji Lane and order their delicious Nutella Brownie Milkshake. At only $12, this is the cheapest out of the lot. While it is slightly similar to the original FreakShakes, The Lab’s Nutella milkshake is crowned with Tim Tam, brownies and chocolate Pocky sticks, alongside mini salted pretzels. #01-01, 1 Jalan Pisang. Benjamin Browns Bistro & Bakery
The prettiest of them all, it’s no surprise Benjamin Browns’ over the top milkshake takes top spot for the Instagram-worthy title. They are always reinventing their menu and even offer limited edition flavours; they previously had an exclusive Tokyo menu featuring Japanese snacks like Tokyo Banana and Giant Cream Collon. Get your caffeine fix in the form of their Coffee Avocado Milkshake ($16) where they infuse vanilla ice cream with coffee and avocado, before crowning the creamy drink with freshly sliced avocado, wafers, sugar crackers, chocolate biscuits, whipped cream and coffee powder. #01-20/21 Forum Shopping Centre, 583 Orchard Road. Tel: 6887 4117
Have your cake and eat it too in the form of a shake at boutique dessert store Cake Spade. Here, the milkshakes are called Cake Shakes and feature a slice of their toothsome cakes. Crowd favourites include their Mudslide ($14.90); drink up a rich dark chocolate ice cream milkshake as you devour a slice of their popular Chocolate Blackout Cake, together with toasted marshmallows, crushed Oreo cookie bits, maple popcorn and Nutella. Available only after 5.30pm. 83 Tanjong Pagar Road. Tel: 6444 3868
